Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a referral?+
No, you don't need a referral to book. However, to claim a Medicare rebate you'll need either a Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral from your GP, or (for concerns related to a current or recent pregnancy) a GP referral for pregnancy support counselling. Without a referral you can still attend as a private client.
How do I get a Mental Health Treatment Plan?+
Book a longer appointment with your GP and let them know you'd like to discuss your mental health. If eligible, your GP will prepare a Mental Health Treatment Plan and a referral to a psychologist. Since November 2025, plans and referrals generally need to come from your usual GP or the practice you're registered with through MyMedicare. A psychiatrist or paediatrician can also refer you. You're welcome to ask your GP to address the referral to me by name, or it can be addressed generally.
Rebated sessions are provided in courses of treatment (usually up to 6 sessions at a time), with a review by your GP before further sessions, up to 10 per calendar year.
Can I claim Medicare for telehealth sessions?+
Yes. Eligible Better Access sessions delivered by video can attract a Medicare rebate, in the same way as face-to-face sessions.
Is telehealth right for me?+
Many people find video sessions a comfortable and convenient way to attend therapy. Telehealth removes the need to travel or arrange childcare, which can make it easier to attend consistently during pregnancy and early parenthood. We can talk together about whether telehealth suits your needs, and if it isn't the right fit, I'm happy to help you find alternative support.
What technology do I need?+
A smartphone, tablet or computer with a camera and microphone, and a reliable internet connection. You'll receive a secure link by email before each session. Just click it at your appointment time; there's no account or software needed. Headphones can help with privacy, and a quiet space where you won't be overheard is ideal.
Can my baby be with me during sessions?+
Absolutely. Babies are welcome. Feeding, settling or pausing when needed is completely okay. Many parents find it easier to attend when they don't need to arrange care.
Do you see partners or fathers?+
Absolutely. Non-birthing parents are most welcome.
Is what I share confidential?+
Yes. What you discuss in therapy is confidential, with some legal and ethical exceptions, for example where there is a serious risk to your safety or someone else's, including a child's. We'll talk about confidentiality and its limits in your first session. See the privacy policy for more.
What if I need urgent help?+
Velvet Psychology is not a crisis service. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 000. For 24/7 crisis support, call Lifeline on 13 11 14. For perinatal support, the PANDA National Helpline is available on 1300 726 306.
